50 hp prop ticking in forward

Just changed water pump on 2004 50 hp,and after putting everything back together I noticed the prop will not spin in either direction in reverse,it will spin freely in neutral in either direction,but in forward gear it will lock in gear in one direction and spin in the other direction making a ticking sound not sure if this is normal,the motor has forward controls.I have compared it to my tiller steer 40 hp and it locks in both directions in forward and reverse and spins free in neutral thanks for any advice

Hi,
It sounds to me as if you may have missed the shift rod adjustment by a small amount when you went back together. If you're working with a shop manual, you might want to go back and follow the rod adjustment procedure.

I haven't worked on the 50 so I don't have the manual to refer to but I saw no one had answered you yet so I thought I would recommend this and keep your post current until someone with actual knowledge of the 50hp has a chance to make a recommendation.
