you could open up the piston assembly. inside are five ball bearings held into the piston with springs. The strength of the springs determines your breakway pressure. If you replaced the springs with something less stiff the the engine would pop up easier. You could theoretically leave the springs out and have a sytem that lifts freely. the rush of fluid would pull the ball valves back into their seats and prevent the engine from falling. So after striking a log you would have to trim down. A hinged plate would be better. Anything done via hydraulics is going to risk overheat.
