454XLi running hot

Did some proactive work over the winer cleaning the HX and oil cooler on my 96 454XLi. The engines were not running hot at the end of last year. Took it out for the first run today and the Port motor is running hot (200 degrees). I'm wondering if I've possibly installed the thermostat backwards? Any other thoughts on what I've done? Water flow appears to be equal from both engines. The other interesting thing about this is that I changed the coolant at the same time, but it didn't appear to me that i replaced as much as I removed - however the expansion tank is full, and when I remove the radiator cap, it also appears to be full.

Thanks for your input.

Oooowww! That's what I just did. (Doh!) First time in decades, but....

If you did, the motor will overheat soon as you push it and not cool down until you let it sit for a while. But if that's NOT the problem, you might have to "burp" the cooling system to get the air out.

Jeff - that's exactly what's happening. When I go up on plane, (approx 3400 RPM) the motor heats up substantially ( I throttle down at 200 degrees) - when I throttle down, the motor cools down to 160 within a minute.

When you say that I might have to "burp" the cooling system - any pointers on how I can do this?

Thanks for your help.

Tom.

"Burp" is synonym for purge - you need to get all of the air out of the closed side. running it thru a couple cycles to get the thermostat to open and closed is the cleanest way (though not real fast).
