454 XL Fuel Pump

Good afternoon,

I went to winterize the boat earlier and could not get it started. I could only get it to sputter after pouring a little gas directly in the carburetor. So, I disconnected the fuel line from the carb and cranked the engine over....dry as a bone...no fuel. Also, when I put my hand on elec fuel pump it was very hot to touch. The engine is a 1995 Crusader 454 XL.

Question for the forum..did the fuel pump burn/wear out?

I guess I am lucky it happened in my yard, and not out at sea.

Thanks in advance.

You can remove the pump and "hook power to it in reverse" out of the boat to free it up. You can flush some fluid through it to clean it out while running it in reverse. This works 85% of the time.

Update...

So after several hours of fuming and trying to understand what happened to the fuel pump, I had my brother come over and take a look to get his thoughts. I turn of the key and the engine roared to life; plenty of fuel flowing. What gives?

Since it was hot and not running, it was stalled. Either the bearings are starting to give out, or some particle jammed the pump. Since reversing seems to fix these, I'd guess something got caught in it. Do you have a filter ahead of the pump?

I am still not sure I fully follow the idea these pumps get jammed. So to reverse, one simply changes polarity?

I have one of those spin on water seperater/filters adjacent to the pump.

Yes, just reverse the polarity, after you remove it from the boat! If you have some hose barbs to attach to the pump, you can pump fuel through it backward to clean the pump out.
