390970 kit issues 69 Evinrude 25

I have a 390970 forward gear kit I'm trying to install and it is pretty straight forward besides one issue. It calls for a thrust washer on the engagement side of the forward gear. The original one is too thick, and no thrust washer for that area is included in the kit.
Only the gear, pancake bearing, washer for the pancake, and the needle bearing. Without the thrust washer, it seems to have just the right amount of free play, but I know it should probably get a thrust washer on the engagement side. Is there a thinner thrust washer that is supposed to be used

If it needed a different thrust washer it would be included in the kit.-----How much free play ( end play ) is there with and without the thrust washer ?----Your location?

There is very little free play without the thrust washer. Just enough to let things rotate smoothly. Less then 1/16 inch. I'd say .050, maybe 060. With the original washer in place, it will not go into the gearcase. None was included in the kit.

So, no thrust washer there at all? You're probably correct. There is barely enough of a recess in the gear to even hold one in place.
