For no reason I can figure out the 60 Hp mariner on my pontoon runs the starter when I turn the batteries selector to on. If the key is on the motor starts but the starter keeps running It began out of the blue and has gone away for no no reason I know of. Appreciate any ideas you may have. Thanks

The engine won't start w/ the ignition off. But when you turn the battery on, (with the ignition switch off) the starter will run, if you turn the key to run while the starter is spinning, the engine will start but the starter will keep spinning until you turn the battery switch off. When the battery switch is turned off the starter stops running and the engine will keep running. Over night it has stopped acting up like this and seems to work OK for the moment. I'm waiting for it to start acting up again???Thanks for your ongoing help. I have worked on a lot of stuff but I am a novice on boat motors.

I played w/ the starting procedure until the starter stuck in the spinning mode. I hit the solenoid w/ the blunt end of a screwdriver and it stopped spinning. That made it obvious that the solenoid was the defective part. Thanks for your help. It is appreciated. Thanks again!

Before replacing the starter, try shooting some penetrating oil on the end. Just fixed one that way this morning--it was sticking.
