225 OB tilt & trim poblem

Have a 2001 Honda 225 hp outboard. last month I heard grinding sounds coming from tilt and trim area. Asked the dealer who to told me to add some fluid. I did and the problem went away. however, periodically the tilt and trim would not move the engine (normal sound comes from the pump but motor doesn't move). I unscrewed the cap and heard a whoosh of air rush in as if it had a vapor lock. this went on and of for the next couple of weekends. Last weekend, I couldn't get the motor move at all (again, pump sounds like its working). dealer says I should spend $2k+ to get a new system installed. Any thoughts on what I should try ?

Also, motor is about 2/3 up right now. would like to lower it so that I could at least use it the remaining few weekends (live in Chicago area). Is there a manual relief valve that I could use to lower the motor ?

thanks
Scott

Yes, there is a manual relief screw on the left side of the engine. Often times when that valve is not fully tightened, or the seal is broken, it will cause the problems you describe.

Find an overhead beam or tree limb that you can use to manually raise the engine. Put a strap around the bottom of the engine and attach it to a come-along or winch, and attach that to the overhang. Open the manual valve and raise the engine to is full height, then flip the safety lever to hold it up that is on the right side of the engine. Open the hydraulic fluid reservoir and fill it to the top with the proper hydraulic fluid or Dexron III ATF transmission fluid. Close the reservoir, and lower the engine. Close the manual relief valve. Let it sit for a couple of hours. Raise again, check fluid level, and top off if needed. Repeat this process until no top off is necessary. Then see if the tilt trim works properly with the regular motor.

BTW - these things are infinitely rebuildable, so a replacement is not necessary or called for. Find another dealer.
