2017 Honda BF9.9D lower unit shift pin and spring installation

Hello all, I am repairing a lower unit replacing the shift shaft, and need to know how bwest to install the shift pin and spring into the housing, with the spring in the shaft it sticks out past the opening so how do you get the pin to stay put while putting it all back in? All factory honda parts used. Competent mechanic but dont do these often.

Hi,

It is normal for the pin to sit in there loosely ahead of the spring and protrude out a bit

With the outboard hung on the transom, keeping it tilted all the way down and close to the hull, usually results in enough "nose up" angle of the gearcase to allow for sliding the propshaft holder assembly in gently and not dislodge the pin..

If you're working on it off the boat and not using a stand, you'll need to prop it in the nose up position somehow.

Hope this helps.

Good luck and welcome to the forum.

Thanks for the reply, I downloaded a service manual and got it figured out, I put the shift dog in below the spring and put the pin in, making the spring stick out of the propeller shaft so parts were in the wrong order. With the spring in the shaft first, you slip the dog on and push the spring down so as to put the retaining pin in and that allows the shift slider pin to go into the shaft and install as a unit. Thanks again.

Glad to hear that you figured it out.
Thanks for updating with the detail I omitted. It's been awhile.

Boating can be fun ....
....when the maintenance is finally done!
