2017 bf90d starts on ether

It starts on ether but won’t start otherwise. Blows the hp pump fuse( bottom 10amp) when it does start on ether. I have fuel to the hp pump, the pump has continuity, it gets 11 volts for a moment, not the two seconds, when the key is turned on, and it gets 8.5 volts when starting. I get one small click from the pump when I jump it from the battery. Thanks for any insight.

Hi,

From what you are saying it sounds to me as if the HP pump is likely shot. Blowing the fuse indicates high current draw.

But, at around $500.a pop...
...delivered...
for a new one....
you might want to do what you can to verify that before spending the money.

I don't work on these and have no experience with the Honda 90 but, if it were me, I would probably make sure that there was no reason for it to draw so many amps. Like making sure the filter isn't dirty or collapsed or that there is no blockage anywhere in the system.

You might first though simply check it's resistance and make sure it's not grounded internally using an ohmmeter. The fact that you say it clicks once when powered by a battery does sound like it's either siezed or is grounded. If it immediately blows the fuse while doing that, I would think internal grounding but you never know.

Other than that, you could disconnect it from the outlet and try running it while monitoring the amp draw with an ammeter If you have one.

I have no specifications to give you, sorry.

Possibly the best advice I can provide you would be to stop running the engine on starting fluid (ether). That stuff is not good for ANY engine....especially a modern one.... and could end up costing you WAY more than the price of a new pump.

I recommend using ether in emergency situations ONLY to avoid damaging your engine.

Sorry you're having problems.
