2011 Mecury 115HP/ Need help please

I was working on a 2011 Mercury 115HP removing the lower unit to change out the impeller. When I removed the lower unit a lot of oil started leaking. I was wondering if anyone has run into this before? Any ideas anyone?

You have to drain the oil when you do the water pump. This is normal.

It was not leaking gear lube it was leaking engine oil.

Actually Jeff,

My mistake. I thought I saw 150hp not 115. The 150hp Verado based engine will give up some oil when pulling the lower unit.

If you are getting oil when pulling the lower on a 115 four stroke you have a leaking seal on the oil pump.


What is the serial number on this engine?

Think I figured it out: The oil sump is much lower than the bottom of the crank, so the drive shaft goes through the sump.

Actually the drive shaft powers the oil pump on the 115. On a Verado based engine the oil pump is chain driven and will leak engine oil when the lower unit is removed if a quart or so is not drained from the sump.


BTW I got some new eye glasses.
