Hello I just learned a ton from the thread ring free thanks. Can anyone riddle me this? I have a 1999 200 efi that the warning system says is still getting hot. I have

replaced the water pump twice, thermostats, popper valve and checked for obstructions with compressed air
pulled a head off to check for blown gasket and scored cylinders (gaskets ok some score but not bad)
ran on lake without thermostats (tried to increase water flow)
replaced lower unit seals ( Probably not related)
did an oil pump flow test (7.5cc good my test 10cc)
took back to lake ran on remote tank 50/1 (to eliminate oil sysem)

I am still getting a hot engine warning at anything over 3000 rpms I,m fresh out of tricks need help many thanks frank

Suggest you use an infrared temp gun on the block when the alarm goes off and see if it's lying to you.

Might simply be a bad sensor.

I've been reading your replies, I'm impressed with your knowledge and willingness to help others, can you help me now? I rebuilt the water pump on my 1999 Merc 200 efi and it blew up on the test run, I must have either overtightened the bolts undertightened them or something else. I am a fair to low grade good mechanic ( fix most things on the farm) but this fix is eating my lunch. What is the correct way to reassemble the darn thing. And is it a good idea to take out the thermostats to increase the water flow? I appreciate your time and advice thanks frank

Pull the lower unit back off, remove the water pump and take a picture of the lower unit where the pump mounts. Then post it here so we can see it. There is more to changing a water pump than installing an impeller.

Thanks Chris for your advice, Still working on a picture ( I'm a computer challenged) but ordered a new pump kit including upper housing and lower base. I'm getting different torque values on the nuts and screw, how tight do you reassemble? thanks frank P S The old base looked a little warped to me but was told that it would squash flat.

The base is what I wanted to see. If the base shows any damage or wear it will cause an over heat. As for torque, tighten it evenly, a little more that snug. If you over tighten it you will crack the housing.

Thanks Chris going to replace the base. Tightening it (evenly) no problem a (little more than snug) is a bit more complicated so far I have 1) 15 inch pds for screw,20in pds for 7/16" nut,30 in pds for 1/2" nut 2)20"pds screw,30"pds 7/16 nut,35"pds 1/2 nut 3) 50 in pds all round 4) 60 in pds all round
I done it wrong once I'd like to get it right this time so whats a guy to do? thanks frank
