2008 BF90 Jammed Starter

Hi Folks,

I`ve been offered a 2008 fuel injected BF90 at a reasonable which has a jammed starter.

Currently it`s engaged so is locking the engine solid so I`m wondering if anyone else has come across this problem and causes for it?

From what I`ve been able to find out from the current owner is that the engine had been running and starting fine on a commercial fishing boat and it has around 200hrs on it. All of a sudden the starter jammed and hasn`t released itself.

The outboard is about a 4hr drive away each way as otherwise I would`ve just gone and taken a look myself.

I`d be very grateful for any insight into possible causes as I don`t want to spend out a load of money on something that could well be a big headache. I do all my own repairs as I was a bike mechanic for over 30yrs and have worked on loads of outboards in my time.

Cheers, Matt.

The only way to tell is to pull the starter.....but I think you already know that. It is possible that the starter is just locked up. In some of the 90's, I have seen water get into the flywheel area and ultimately get into the starter, causing the starter to fail.

If you can have someone pull the starter for you (and see if it rotates) and take a picture of the flywheel area, that may tell you a lot.

Cheers Mike and I think it`ll just have to be a case of spending a day driving up and back to check it out myself.

I didn`t know if there had been any service recalls or updates required in regards to this age of engine.

I would certainly not buy until I knew it was the starter that is locked up and not the engine itself.
Good luck.

I think I`ll need to give the guy a call and see if I can remove the starter prior to puchase so I can see what`s going on. If he won`t allow me to then I think I`ll be giving it a miss.

Cheers, Matt

Phoned the owner of the outboard today and he`s fine with me taking the starter off to check the engine isn`t seized so long drive on the cards for me tomorrow to see what it`s like. Fingers crossed it`ll be ok but I`ll update when I get back.

Well that`s me the owner of yet another Honda outboard.

The starter was at fault so removed it and the engine wasn`t seized. It`s far from in perfect condition and will need several new parts but overall then it`s a good starting point.

It ended up being a 2007 rather than a 2008 and I know that there was a service bulletin #61 for them but I`m not sure if this has been carried out or how to check that it has been.

If anyone has access to Honda`s database and could have a quick check for me then I`d be very grateful. I`ll PM engine serial number and details over rather than putting them on an open forum.

Cheers, Matt

You can post the serial number and I will check on the reported Service Bulletins done.

It is possible that they were done out of warranty.
