2007 Honda BF9.9 Power Thrust Questions

I recently purchased a 2007 Honda 9.9 Power Thrust Kicker that according to the Owner, was stolen off his boat a month or so after he purchased it new back in 2007.

In 2020, he got a call from the Sheriffs Office where he previously lived here in Kalifornistan saying they had recovered a bunch of stolen outboard motors from some tweakers and that his motor was one of them. When he got the motor back, they had cut the 12 volt battery/starter cables and the remote control wire bundle off about a foot out of the motor. By that appearance, it seems very likely that hasn't been run since it was stolen and reunited with the Owner. He had sold his boat so just stuck the motor in the back of his shop until he finally decided to sell it.

What I want to do is hopefully be able to purchase replacements for the hacked-up electrical Cables/Wiring Harness, clean/rebuild or replace the Carburetor, ensure the motor runs well, and sell it as I already have a Yamaha T9.9 High Thrust on my boat. The photos below show the motor as I purchased it. According to a Honda Owners Manual for a 2001 BF9 that I found online, it appears the motor has indeed been laying on the wrong side, allowing oil to get into places it shouldn't. I have no clue as to what to do to address this issue.

Also, it seems to me that Honda makes it difficult to identify and order replacement parts. Can anyone direct me to a friendly site/source for Honda Outboard Parts? Any advice would be appreciated in helping to resurrect this motor.

Thanks - David

Hi,

Since this outboard will pull start no problem with said wires cut, there's no guarantee that it wasn't used that way. But it does look in pretty awesome condition still so, maybe.

As far as lying on the wrong side goes, engine oil could have gotten up top into the combustion chamber and into the valve cover. Stand it up vertical a day or two.

Next move is pull the sparks and crank it a bunch. While that would probably be good enough, I might take the breather hose (item 24 in link below) off the valve cover before starting and then let it clear it's throat while running to be sure no oil gets in through the intake.

After that, it's just mop up the mess.

While www.boats.net isn't as "friendly" as it used to be, I still buy from them.

Good luck.
