I have a 2006 mercury 90 hp 2 stroke that appears to have gone into some sort of safe or guardian mode. I had just purchased this rig and I had been running the engine all afternoon at no more than 4000 RPMs. When I was about to take it in, I decided to open it up to see what it could do. After about 2-3 seconds, the engine automatically pulled back to idle speed (it never shut down). Just before this, I glanced down at the RPM meter and it showed about 5800. The maximum RPMs for this motor is 5500 according to the manual. I'm not sure if the RPM meter is accurate and not sure if this engine is protected by a over reving system. <br>

Now, no matter what I do, the motor only idles. It will shift into forward, reverse and neutral just fine but won't rev over the idle setting so I can only putt putt along. Called the original owner and he never had anything like this happen. There was no alarm/horn of any kind and still isn't. The throttle linkages on the engine appear to be working fine but they have no effect on the RPMs any longer. I do not know if this 2 stroke carbureted motor has a safe mode of any kind but something seems to have kicked in. I have not yet tried to manually move the throttle linkages by hand but given that they move fine with the throttle, I doubt I'll see any difference. The motor has plenty of oil in the tank and I felt the tattle tail right after it happened and it was cool so it wasn't an overheat issue. I also let it cool down for 20 minutes and restarted it several times but there was no difference. It just idles along. The boat is now out of the water. Any insight into this issue or things to check would be helpful. Thanks, MJF
