Getting ready for part 1 of yearly maintenance this weekend. Replacing HP & LP fuel filters, T-Stats, etc. I came across the below piping diagram when looking fir one of the fuel filters and stumbled on yet another set of fuel filters. Take a look, this one appears to be yet another fuel pump filter with some kind of strainer. Do you guys replace these two regularly as well? Looks like right off the top of the VST?

On my engine, if everything is running well, I just change out the LP and HP filters every 200 hours. Every 100 hours, I do pull the plugs and inspect for the proper burn, then re-install with a light coat of high heat grease on the threads. I also remove the T-stats and look for corrosion, clean out and soak the T-stats in CLR overnight.

It took me a couple of years to find all those filters. Here is a complete list.

Fuel filters and screens on BF 200 and BF 225
• Low pressure fuel filter 16901-ZY3-003
• High pressure fuel filter screen 16911 ZY3-010. Item 34 at http://www.boats.net/parts/search/H...04/BF225A4 XA/VAPOR SEPARATOR ASSY/parts.html

• Fuel Pump Filter 16911-759-003 (over top of VST)
• Suspension strainer 16915-ZW5-000 (over top of fuel pump filter) See items 5 & 6 at http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Honda/Outboard Engine/2005/BF200A5 XCA/PIPING/parts.html

• Fuel Pump Insulator 16718-ZY6-013 (inside the fuel pump housing). See item 29 at http://www.boats.net/parts/search/H...04/BF225A4 XA/VAPOR SEPARATOR ASSY/parts.html

• Fuel filter mesh 16614-P5G-003 (on fuel rail). See item 4 at http://www.boats.net/parts/search/H...er/BF225AK0 XCA/FUEL PIPE INJECTOR/parts.html

This probably won't post very will on this rather crude messaging forum, so if you want a more readable list send an e-mail to me at [email protected].

The logic of this fuel filtering system is really straight forward, if a bit anal. As fuel enters the engine, it goes through the fuel/water separator, then through the LP fuel filter. This should get all initial water and crude out of the fuel, especially if you have an external fuel/water separator installed. From the LP filter the fuel goes through the LP fuel pump and to the VST. From the VST to the fuel pump filter and screen to the HP fuel pump. It is screened again by the mesh under the fuel pump, then on to the fuel rail where is is filtered one last time before getting to the injectors.

So, for me, the bottom line, if all is running well, is to empty and clean the on-board fuel/water separator, replace the LP fuel filter, and replace the HP fuel filter at least every 200 hours.

I think you're referring to #7 in the diagram. That one is a pita to get to. I came across that one when I had to pull of the intake manifolds. It can be done by pulling straight up thru the top in between block and intakes. The hose does connect to top of VST.

Skooter / CHawk thsvks for replying! I’m thinking Honda’s a tad bit conservative with their filters. Thanks for the heads up on the fuel pump one, hopefully won’t have to dig into that one. I ordered the one after the VST, I’ll see if i can get to it.
