2006 bf 225 hp engine light/alarm

Hi all ! First post here. I have 2006 bf 225 with 140 hrs of no problems until now. After running at cruising speed , when brought down to idle /trolling after a minute or two the engine light on my key switch comes on and alarm sounds at 1 second intervals. Checked and cleaned water separater, and this condition still occurs.
When this happens ,I notice that the engine seems to run rough but only for a second or two, like a slight growl and vibration. If it is the O2 sensor is it interchangeable with an automotive application ?

I do not know if they are interchangeable. You may want to check with your dealer.. I think your may engine fall into a category that if it is an oxygen sensor, it may be covered under warranty. If you are the original owner, you should be receiving a letter from Honda about an extension to the O2 sensor warranty. The warranty was extended to six years.

It is only a guess what is wrong without putting it into service mode. If you are looking to do some of youur own diagnostics, there is a way to short the SCS connector with just a paperclip, but it you use the wrong connector pins, you can fry the ECM. I recommend you purchase a SCS short connector 070PZ-ZY30100. That way there are no mistakes. It costs about $18 (at little pricey for just a connector and a piece of wire).

If you have read this forum much, it is highly recommended to purchase the official repair manual from Helm Inc.

If this is the only time that you have experienced this, and the problem went away the next time you turned on your engine....you may have just had a large travelling wave that hit the back of the engine when you stopped and some of the water found its way into one of the bottom cylinders (causing the brief rough running), then it caused the o2 sensor to have a wacky reading and through a code.

The above paragraph is just a theory but has been known to happen.

Mike, thank you for your reply. I put boat in the water again and the alarm comes on within 2 minutes after the engine is warmed up.I called all dealers within the SF Bay area and no one has an O2 sensor in stock. One dealer called back and said my motor is under warranty and they could probably get to it in the middle of June. I'd rather buy the part and fix it myself for the time being so that i don't have to have the boat in the shop while I should be fishing.If anybody has a link for the replacement O2 sensor vendors it would be appreciated. The dealers here act as though they never heard the O2 sensor failure problem. After reading many posts on this forum I have learned alot about this engine and its shortcomings. Will keep posted to help others with same problem.

Update- replaced O2 sensor, no more alarm. Problem fixed for now. I thought the engine ran fine before , but now is much smoother and seems quieter at WOT. Can get to 5400 rpm now, before maybe 5100. Noticeable improvement. This forum is a great resource . Thanks !

Have exactly the same problem on a 225BF 2003. I replaced the O2 sensor with a same one but from o Honda car (same sensor same connector) but it didnt work. Has anybody has any idea if they are compatible?

hi i bought a 2006 honda 225 starts and runs great but check engine light comes on solid and alarm beeps wont take trottle i changed the oil sencors and temperature sensor still the same problem need help bad
