2005 BF90 warm restart issue

The 2005 BF90 on the Pontoon that I bought starts & runs well but restart right away when warm is an issue - motor turns over but does not want to fire up & run. Locking out the shifter and advancing the throttle just slightly, she starts right up.

No idea of hours on motor but the history is the boat/motor were purchased by the party I bought it from back in 2012 at a repossession auction in like new condition. They supposedly put less than 50 hours on it in the 14 years they owned it before I purchased it from them.

They provided no maintenance history so I replaced the complete Water Pump, Spark Plugs, Thermostat, Fuel Filter, Motor Oil & Filter, Lower Unit Lube, and External Anodes. Idle is right around 950-1000rpm.

Any ideas what might be causing this Warm Restart issue?

Just a guess but you might want to have a look at the valve adjustment.
Tight valves can affect starting.

During "break in", an engine can experience some wear "up top" to rockers and stems as they work in against each other. The same goes for initial valve to seat contact.

Whatever is causing it, the problem doesn't sound like much more than an annoyance.

Make sure the timing belt is in good shape and is "tracking" properly.

Good luck.

Sitting unused it could have what I think of as cholesterol in the combustion chamber, which may affect the valves, aside from a valve adjustment. Does this boat have an internal fuel tank and has it been cleaned? If it has an internal tank, does it have an external water fuel filter? Did you see much debris in any of the filters you replaced? Does this outboard have carbs?

I’d run a load of something like sea foam in the fuel to clean out the combustion chamber, running it at high rpm for extended periods.
