On my Honda 2005 BF6D motor the gasket between cylinderhead and exhaust pipe is damaged and let gasdes out into the room under the cover so the motor has a lack of oxigen and is stalling when the cover is on. In order to get the exhaust pipe out to replace the gasket do I need to take the motor out of ther colum or can I dismount the colum from the bottom up to loosen the screws of the exhaust and how can I remove the exhaust pipe without cutting the small tube at the topend of the exhaust pipe?

Hi winnytherat,

First off, I don't know the answer to your question. I've never even seen a 6hp Honda outboard. I also can't find any references to a BF6D. The parts website www.boats.net has listings to BF6A but not a D model.

I also don't see a shop manual listed for a BF6D on the Honda power equipment site. Only the A model. But the site is going through maintenance and maybe that will be corrected in their update. It's supposed to come back online sometime tomorrow so I will check back then.

I looked to see if there was a manual available because that's probably going to be what you need to precisely answer your question.

But referencing the links below, does your D model look similar to the A model?

Cylinder head and exhaust manifold:

https://www.boats.net/catalog/honda...in-baec-1000001-to-baec-1099999/cylinder-head

Engine block:

https://www.boats.net/catalog/honda...hna-vin-baec-1000001-to-baec-1099999/cylinder

Extension case with exhaust chamber:

https://www.boats.net/catalog/honda...0001-to-baec-1099999/extension-case-gear-case

Engine case and cover:

https://www.boats.net/catalog/honda...vin-baec-1000001-to-baec-1099999/engine-cover

Again, I don't know but do suspect that you will need to remove the extension case as well as take the powerhead out of the case to replace that gasket. But with the extension case off you may be able to simply remove the exhaust manifold from the bottom of the head.

I don't see the pipe you talk about cutting off so the D model and A model might not be very similar to one another.

Just trying to help you figure out what you might need to do a proper repair.

Hi JGMO,

thanks for that reply so detaild.
I found a way to get the exhaust out and back in.
But t it seems as if the flat seal surfacd on yhe cylinder head is all but flat.
I cannot see how it is bevause of the awkward situation, but I think the head area
has coroded and has disapppeared, now I have to take the head of in order to see what
is going there. Think it will be a late summer season.

Hi winny,

Couldn't get a mirror in there to inspect it?

Well, at any rate, I bet that you have called it correctly about corrosion destroying the mating surfaces.

The problem is, it's such a high heat area that I'm not sure if an epoxy patch like JB Weld would hold. You might need to have it tig welded and resurfaced if you don't want to buy a replacement. Even though, a new head is only $111 + shipping so that might be cheaper and easier.

You sound like you're pretty resourceful and capable so I'm hoping to see an update about your success sometime before Thanksgiving.

Fair winds and calm seas to ye.

Hi jgmo, maybe its good idea to change the head, instead of welding and refine the seal surface of the existing head. I´m sure you are talking about 111$+shipping, that must in US? I am in Portugal, Europe, diferent thing getting stuff shipped from US is a big hassle as a private person, becausae it realy is a hassle with customs here for orders from outside EU (european community)... You know what I mean.?!
Hopefuly all done way before Thanksgiving.

Hi winny,

Yes, I found out about shipping something to Europe when my friend that lives in France left his electric guitar at my house in California.

When I priced what it would cost to send it to him I think he could have bought 4 or 5 of those guitars for the same amount of money!

I'm sorry that you're in that situation.

Good luck with the repair.
