My stbd BF150 with 980 hrs started alarming after being on the hill for bottom paint and starter replacement (rebuilt at local shop). I noticed soot on the extension case and the oil case and found the gasket between the forward most portion had no gasket, I plugged it with 4200 due to the expense to repairing it right (4 to 5K I'm guessing).
When I started it after going back in the water the short beep and mil alarm comes on after 5 minutes (RPM doesn't seem to be a factor) alarms at idle, 2k and 4.4k almost to the second after start up-evert time!
I cleaned the water separator and inspected the lp filter. There was a small amount of water in both but not enough to float the float, I disconnected the water separator plug, sg2 is grounded and the signal wire is open.
Has anyone seen this problem?

Soot on the extension case is a rich condition. Can be caused by stuck thermostat, faulty temp sensor, high fuel pressure or blocked IAC filter. Suggest a manual if you don't have one. First check the fault code by bridging the lime green and black terminals in the 4 pin red diagnostic plug in the electrical box. There is no short answer to this question.Let us know what fault you have and if you don't have a shop manual I suggest downloading one.

Iang,

My service manual doesn't have the error codes in it or I can't find them. The code is 4 long flashes followed by 8 short flashes. It is the only error code displayed.

That is code 48 which is O2 sensor failure. It could also be caused by a rich fuel mixture. Check your thermostats to be sure engine isn't running cold, if good then replace the O2 sensor

Thank you!
What publication did you get the information from?
I have a Honda Marine Shop Manual fourth addition 61YZ600E4. It doesn't contain that data, and I want access to it.

iang,
Thank you for the advice and trouble codes!
My A/F sensor is damaged (bent at the top).
I removed the A/F sensor from the exhaust manifold since all T/S pointed to it. I cleaned it with carb spray and the symptoms changed.
The engine ran for 25 minutes at the dock at 2200rpm without an alarm.
It did alarm once after I pulled it back to idle (800rpm) after 5 minutes but didn't alarm again.
I ran the engine for about an hour in total at the dock.
Tomorrow it gets a sea trial.
I have a new OEM A/R sensor on order.

In my experience of failed O2 sensors on my 225 they will not alarm unless at idle.
Raised revs can increase the exhaust temperature which "may" allow the sensor to operate if it's just the heater circuit that's failed.
I was able to run at 1300rpm for 30 mins yesterday without any alarm - as soon as I dropped back to idle the alarm went off.

If you monitor fuel useage you will find it noticeably elevated in the condition you mentioned. Basically it's a crap system and expensive to maitain. Honda has stuffed up somewhere along the line because their was never an issue until the A6 came out and started recalling motors for ecu and O2 sensor upgrades, which still didn't solve the problem Now the new V6 motors don't have them at all and use about 20% more fuel than their predecessors, go figure.

I'm sure you're right.... Unfortunately I can't get a walker sensor in the UK right now!
My sister is going to Florida before Xmas so I'm going to order some stuff from boats.net that she can bring back.

I didn't know that about the newer motors consumption.... That's disappointing.

Just as a matter of interest, Yumbo Parts in Japan are genuine for all Japanese outboards. Their genuine Honda O2 sensors are 126.00 USD compared with 346.00 from Boats.net
