2004 BF150 trim cyl leak

Today I noticed a puddle of ATF under the starboard engine. I followed it up to the left trim cyl. I hope someone here has been through this and can offer some advice. My first question is, can I change those seals without removing the whole unit from the transom clamp? Number two... the other trim cyl on that engine is dry as is the tilt cyl but do you think I should change seals in all three or wait for them to start to leak...the sleeping dog theorem. Also if the trim cyl seals are changeable where they are, is the same true for the tilt cyl seals? Appreciate any and all help and experiences with this....John

I spent about 1/2 hr searching the archives with no luck. If someone knows all this has been hashed out in a previous I would be indebted if you could point me to it.

trim seals can be change without opening full unit, you have to open trim rod guide and if the guide is ok you can replace only the oil seal (inside the guide )and dust dust seal(which can see from out)

If its not leaking nothing to worry,

parts are available, only the seals and if guide is damage can get guide with seals,,, trim and tilt seals are different and opening tools also different.

Thanks for this info wajira. I ordered the seals and the tool this morning. Just wondering what you think where to position the piston when I unscrew the cap. I am not resealing the piston since it is holding well. When I unscrew the cap and lift it up and off the stem it will pull a vacuum at first. Will the opposite piston be able to recede a bit to alleviate this?

the procedure which i use is, full tilt up the engine put holding lock, press trim switch down till trim rods able to push down,(trim rod will be free and can push down ) And release manual screw also. then open cap with special tool (carefully with not hit to stem by mistake and use tool properly, some time cap too tight to open )
after open cap you can remove stem, vacuum will be their but its come out,

You are "the man" wajira! I promise I will be careful not to damage the stem. I will get back with you about the outcome. My parts will probably not be here till next week. Thanks for all your insight into my project, it is much appreciated.

Just out looking things over and planning for when my parts show up. I noticed that the caps on the trim cylinders only have 4 pin holes in each. The Honda wrench says it is a 8 pin wrench. Does anyone know if the pins in the wrench are removable? What does it mean if my trim cylinders have only half the holes? Hoping for some clues.

yes cap on the trim cylinder have 8 holes and some old engines and parts which we get from company have 4 holes, its not a big prob, but when you going to open 4 holes cap will be little problem, sometime if wrench pin doesn't match the holes, coz it has only 4 holes, 8 holes cap easy to open,

the tool which we get from company is 3 pin,it has only 3 pin, many time this pins are broken so we remove half broken pins and put another pin,

can you post some photos of wrench ?

Thanks for the response Wajira. I haven't received the wrench or parts just yet. they should be here in a couple of days. In the mean time I will try to find a three or four pin spanner.

Well, I received the wrench and seals yesterday. My worries about the Honda 8 pin wrench not fitting the caps with only 4 holes were unnecessary. The wrench comes with 8 pins but they are threaded so you can screw as many as needed in the pattern needed. The job went well. the caps were not seized and came off and went back on nicely. The only thing I had to wing it on was the wrench has a cut-out to accept a 1/2 inch drive ratchet and when installed on my torque wrench it extends the lever length by about 3 inches. I don't have the math skills to figure out the additional torque value that adds at any given setting on the torque wrench. The Honda manual calls for 103 foot/pounds so I backed off the wrench to 90 ft/lbs to compensate for the extra lever length. It seems good and tight.

OK good to know you are done the job, Can you give me the part number of 8 pin wrench ? coz im using 3 pin wrench which always make problem for me,

thank you

wajira

Wajira, the Honda part # for the 8 pin wrench is...070PA-001A100. I thank you for your help with my project. You boosted my confidence level and made the job easier.
Best Regards..John

I love it when a plan comes together - Good job FishPirate. Same, same to Wajira for being a great contributor to this forum.
