2003 Evinrude 115 Carb excessive smoking/rough idle

Engine runs perfect at speed. New plugs, filters and fuel lines and bulb. Compression is 125 on all 4 cylinders. I have oil tinted fuel in filter before fuel pump. VRO pump bad? Not against changing pump and going to premix. Ideas?
Thanks in advance

Since you're NOT premixing at the present... and you do have oil tinted fuel at the fuel filter in a proper position between the VRO and the fuel supply, Yes, as that thought is going through your mind... a VRO problem exists. Either rebuild or replace the VRO pump.

I think we need to start with a model # here.--------I do not believe there is a 2003 carbureted 115 hp Evinrude.

Okay racer... sounds like a winner to me!

Since I retired in 1991, I seem to fall into that defaulted category quite often... just don't give it a thought. Counting on you to keep me straight.

We need a set of peektures of this motor.-----That will help identiify it.----Need to know what you have , not what you think you have.

???----Not sure why someone would put EVINRUDE decals on a JOHNSON motor of 2003 vintage with carburetors and no model identification.-----Unless of course they really want to hide something from the law.

HMMMMMMMM.. No bueno will have to pull all my purchase info when I get home today.

Anywhere else on engine to get model or serial number?

Look for a aluminum core plug... looks like a small quarter size freeze out plug, somewhere on the powerhead. The model and/or serial number is usually on it. Also a heavy duty decal at the top portion of the swivel bracket that the engine turns on, between the swivel bracket and the long exhaust housing.

I buy motors from the pawn shop too. Often find numbers obliterated. Sad, but once its in my hands, it gets fixed and moves along. Once you fix it, please keep out the ethanol. It has no place in the aviation or marine world. Illegal to use in airplanes and illegal to use above 10% in marine. Shouldn't be recommended in any VRO's at all. Notice the tag....."ethanol RESISTANT". I "resist" getting old, but for some reason its not working too well!
