2003 BF90 Massive Oil Leak

I have a 2003 Bf90, 1600 hrs, fresh water. I prepped the boat as usual to launch this year, including impeller, oil change etc... all the usual. ran if for 5 min on muffs and all was well.....just as it has been for the past 20 yrs I've owned it. It has never burned (any measurable) or leaked any oil. Anyway, I launched it and within 15 minutes of idling I got my first ever oil alert. I shut it down and took the cowl off - full of oil all around the base of the engine. Probable 2 quarts dumped in there. I was hoping I did something stupid when I changed the oil filter but no-dice, didn't appear to be leaking from an improperly installed filter.

So here I am doing a bit of research to see if there's anything easy I can check. My gut (and experience) tell me it's probably some seal or gasket that failed and a major undertaking is necessary to get to the root of it.

Two questions: 1. anything easy I can check? 2. What do you think is/are the most likely culprit(s)?

This leak came on suddenly. No leak for 5 min on muffs..........dumped everything after 15 min idling in the water.

Thanks in advance.

Problem solved. I lucked out. Went back to the boat, filled it with oil, and looked carefully everywhere with a flashlight...........and saw oil spurting out the valve cover gas on the bottom side of the valve cover. Phew. The fact that there was so much oil up top where the powerhead was nagging at me......main seal or pan gasket failure would be hard pressed to fill that area. anyway, case closed.
