I purchased a bass boat with a 2002 Mercury XR6 150 HP this fall. I have some concern about the cooling of the motor. When cold started, it takes a while for water to appear through the tell tale, (minute or two). When it does it sputters for another minute or two and then becomes a full stream. The motor appears to run good. When I run around the lake, stop to fish for a while and start the motor back up, it will take a while for the tell tale to appear again, maybe 20-30 seconds or so (in full stream). I have read some forums about this motor that it has thermostats that will open at 140 degrees and the tell tale stream won't start until then... is that accurate? The water that comes out is very hot, but if the motor needs to get to 140 degrees first that makes sense to me. Once the full stream has began, it does not sputter. I have not had my temperature alarm sound off. I was used to my old '86 mercury 75 spiting out water in a full stream in just a few seconds. I ordered a manual for the motor, but it does not indicate the motor should or should not behave this way. I think I plan to replace the water pump and impeller before next spring to be safe, but would sure feel a bit more comfortable if I can figure out if my motor is behaving the way it should be. Thanks in advance for any insight.
