When running the motor at top speed for a minute or too the motor sounds like the propeller is free spinning. When I run at low speeds the motor runs like its bran new. Any thoughts any one.

Well, I believe that your senses may be correct. The prop's inner hub may be "spun".

You can check that by placing the outboard in gear while it's not running and then try to turn the prop by hand.

(Caution: when shifting an outboard while the engine isn't running (dry shifting), slowly turn the propeller by hand as you select the gear. It doesn't matter which way it rotates or which gear. Just make sure it's moving so that the clutch can engage without binding.)

If you can force any rotation at all by hand, that will indicate that the hub has failed and you will probably need a new prop.

If you operate in "bony" waters....meaning debris, rocks or stumps....and you think that striking something may have caused this there are replacement props available with rebuild-able hubs that might ultimately save you some money. But, they are more expensive initially.

Most times though, the hubs just wear out due to age and normal use. Often, just looking at the hub you can see that the rubber is failing and is being pushed out.

Good luck and please let us know what you find.

I checked the inner hub as you explained in your response. I also inspected the gas line, squeeze ball. Any other subjection jgmo

Hi,

Well...I'm kinda lost on this I guess.

Is this a tiller model or remote control?

Is it electric start or pull start only?

What made you think to check the fuel line squeeze ball? Is it because the motor is actually slowing down when the problem occurs?

You wrote in your original post:

"the motor sounds like the propeller is free spinning "

I took that to mean that the engine would "speed up" or...
....said differently.... the rpms would go high and there would be a loss of forward drive or thrust
Was I wrong about that?

If so, then I just don't understand what you're describing.

But, if that is indeed what is happening, the only other thing that I can think of that might cause that besides a spun prop would be an issue in the transmission.

Is there a chance that you could post a video of the problem happening?

Sorry, lots of questions and no answers but I need to ask so I can try to help.

I am going fishing this weekend. I will see if i can make a little video. The Motor is a pull start nothing fancy. i read about checking the full line and squeeze ball online for cracks. Thanks for getting back to me.

Other questions I probably should have asked you are:

Is this outboard a recent purchase?

Did the outboard work fine before but this problem just suddenly started happening?

Wrong pitch on prop allowing the outboard to overrev?

Prop/engine not deep enough in the water and prop is cavitating?

I did purchase the motor about a month ago. The motor worked very well on the smaller lakes. The issue started when i was on a bigger lake running 3/4 to full throttle. Over the weekend I was out on the lake and noticed the motor at 3/4 and just over 1/2 throttle. The same thing was happing good RPM loss of forward motion power. I hope this make scents. Thanks
