2001 bf50a flywheel

I'm sure this has been asked a thousand times, but a quick search showed I could reused the bolts, but . . . I think the magnets are touching the underside of the flywheel (new noise), so I'd like to pull it to look. Do I need a puller? Also is there a way to check the throttle dashpot. It hung up at 3000 once last time out (fast chopped throttle), but returned to idle later in the day normally.

No..you do not need a puller. Once the bolts are out, you will have to exert some effort to rock the flywheel back and forth...due to the pull of the magnets.

You may not have an issue with the dashpot, so this may not be a valid test just for it...but you might have corrosion built up on the butterfly of one or more carburetor and that could be where it is sticking.

Disconnect the throttle linkage going the to the plastic lever that the dashpot is attached to. That way, you can move the throttle and carb linkages by hand along its entire range and see if there is anything binding, etc.

If you feel anything, then you can disconnect the throttle linkage going between the three carburetors and operate each carburetor lever one at a time to see if the binding can be isolated.

Thanks for the flywheel details. This engine has low hours (less than 50), would the magnets be coming apart this quickly or is it possible a mount (bolt, screw, etc.) is loose and permitting some movement?

I pulled the carb linkage and was able to work the throttles separately and found no binding, which is what has me wondering about the dashpot. I'll guess I can suck on the vacuum line and get steady resistance from the dashpot, yet it still lets the linkage rod descend anyway. Any way to check this and possibly the check valve inline before it?

I pulled the flywheel and didn't see anything rubbing, so now I'm wondering about the noise.

Also is it possible to put a temperature gauge on this engine?

Were there any metal shavings or black dust (magnet dust) attached to any of the parts under the flywheel?

What kind of noise did you hear? Did the pitch of the sound increase as the rpm of the engine increased?

If you can hear the noise while running on a hose, take a stethoscope or a long screwdriver (held against your ear) and search for the noise that way from top to bottom (gear case).

If you are hearing a ticking noise, it could be a chipped tooth in your pinion gear.

As for the temperature gauge....there is no standard set up for Honda. There is a gauge kit with a temp sensor that needs to be in contact with the block, made by someone. I just can not recall the manufacturer. It is probably either Veethree (Formerly Teleflex) or Faria.

There was a thin layer of black dust (no shavings) on the underside of the flywheel and the faces of the magnets, but the tops look dirty, but relatively clean. I could see the wrap on the windings was an orange color. The black plastic winding holders where plastic looking (almost shiny black) but not covered in dust, just a bit dirty. When I get it back together I'll try to pin down the noise a bit, but I remember it increased with RPM and was a whine with a rhythmic tick.

Is there a common water jacket plug, that I can use for a temperature sender, or will I need to tap something? For example, can I put a tee in the thermo switch hole, so I can install a standard water temp gauge along with it?

PaulRic - I have successfully attached temperature sensors to each cylinder bank of my BF 225 using an external sender and a heat conducting epoxy. Send me an e-mail at [email protected] and I will send the detailed instructions with pictures. Having said that, if you have the expertise to drill and tap the water jacket at the proper place, that is a better solution than an epoxied-on sensor. You just need to be careful that the resistance from the sensor is compatible with the gauge. I used Teleflex 67020P gauges and Sierra temp senders 18-5896.

Faria make Cyl Head Temp gauges in a range of styles, & come with bolt-on sensors (FAR90405)

here's a pic in case that link goes bad

Whatever option you choose, the sender should be fitted at the top end(thermostat end) of the cylinder head which is the hottest end.

We have had a few issues with the magnets getting corrosion under them on our 2004 BF50's. Causes the rubbing noise and eventually seems to burn out the coils. You can usually see faint stripes where the magnets rub and a shiny spot on one or more of the coil faces.

When I took a look, I didn't see any stripes or shiny spots, but I'll pull it again and have another look. How precise do the coils need to be, if I elect to pull them and clean any corrosion under them?

I just purchased my honda 2001 50 four stroke. Older guy had it and sat for the last season since he was sick. Out last week it started making a rubbing noise under the flywheel case I took it off and found the black dust and shavings you spoke about also looks like not sure if new but the fly wheel was rubbing the plastic cover on top. Is this just replacing the magnets? I am very handy. Sounds from the other posts it should just in bold and wiggle off. Are the magnets just underneath? Thanks for any help you can give just want to get out fishing
