Hi
New to this forum. Is part # 586292 "power pack" also know as the (ECU) engine control unit and or the (EMM) engine management module? Secondly, oem part vs CDI aftermarket?
I appreciate your help. Thank you in advance
Ken

Nope. Not the same.
Powerpack is the part of the ignition system that takes voltages from the stator, and switches it out to the ignition coils at the proper time for each cylinder to spark.

An ECU or EMM is a computer that controls running functions of newer fuel injected outboards, four stroke models, etc.

The powerpack is a dumb device, the EMM has a microprocessor in it and runs a program.

CDI is good stuff, OEM is good stuff. CDI is cheaper.

Hi, thanks. According to my repair manual as far as i can tell, my motor has a ECU. Any idea where this may be located on engine? Or a part#? After looking through the parts descriptions and parts diagrams, the only other part I noticed it might be is called a rectifier & regulator # 586075? Thanks again for your quick response!

EMM for Fichts are not available as a aftermarket item. It is a repairable item thru certain companys such as DFI Tech and CDI/Rapair. Whats you problem that you think it needs EMM??

You posted J90PLSID....shows it is optical ignition, carbs, powerpack...normal stuff....not Ficht.

The part number you posted is for a four cylinder powerpack.

What is wrong here?

Hi
The overheating warning horn and slow operation keeps activating. I installed a new water pump impeller. I installed 2 new thermostats (which i verified open at the right temperature). I checked that the temp switch had good ground contact. I tested the temp switch per the shop manual and it tested out fine. I tested the temp sensor and it needs to be replaced. I hope this is my problem. There are a few other tests the manual says can be performed to check diode, wiring harness and gauges. I will try to do these today. Anyway, i was lead to believe i had a emm. the motor has been hard to start and running rough while not in the shut down mode. I was hoping one of the parts i mentioned was the emm and i might have a easy fix by replacing it? I hope i'm going down the right path. I appreciate your time and advise. Thanks
I forgot to mention i also verified the motor is not actually overheating by checking temp of cylinders during operation while the alarm is going off.

Now you are talking....you know it is not overheating...great. First test to do....make sure it is not really hot. Good work.

Ok...debug why it is throwing a hot sensor.....two temp sensors, one in each head....just disconnect those systematically to figure out which one is defective.

All that diode stuff is last resort. Very unusual for those diodes to fail.

Oh...you were hoping it was the EMM? Easy fix?

Just believe me.....you NEVER EVER hope it is the EMM. Easily a $1.5k job at most shops, and that is IF they know what they are doing.

Hi
I ordered a new temp sensor. It tested fine for opening and closing at the correct temperatures when heated and cooled. But it failed on the ohms test at room temperature. The diode test is pretty easy, so I am going to check that out anyway. Wow, I didn't know the emm was that complicated of a fix and so expensive. Glad my motor doesn't have that! I will let you know how it goes after i receive and install the new part.

I recently used the "Mercury Outboard Forum" on the marine engine site and couldn't have been more please with the help and advise I got!!
My son had a fishing tournament and we were able to use our little motor because of people like you!

It is awesome that all of you experts share your knowledge!!

Thank you very much!
Ken
