2001 350 Mag no start

Hi everybody.

I am a new Forum member. I have a 2001 Mercrusier 350 Mag MPI engine with an Alpha drive in a Crownline 202BR. The boat just left my wife stranded and of course I am out of town on business. The engine ran fine all afternoon. Then she shut it off and it would not start. I had her check the lanyard to make sure it was on. Also had her cycle the throttle / shift lever through full range of motion in forward - neutral - reverse and back to neutral. The engine cranks but will not start. I figure it's either the fuel pump or the ignition module. When I get home I will pour a small amount of fuel into the manifold and see if it will start. If not, I will probably order an ignition module.

Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated!

she said it initially fired when she it cranked it and it sounded like it wanted to start but as soon as she released the key from start mode it died. After multiple tries it just cranked with no firing at all. I wont be home till the weekend so I can't get into it.

Motors with ballast resistor circuits (that are open) tend to do that. Ditto for bad resistor wire arrangements. Jumping directly to the coil temporarily eliminates that as a problem.

This is an EFI, Not an OLD points ignition.........I understand you are trying to help but if your information is bad it will confuse the issue (s)...

be sure to answer only if you fully understand the components having an issue and not any possibility.

Ok guys I am back from my road trip and here is what I found.

Note - The day the engine quit, my wife struck a submerged plastic barrel (From somebody's dock). It gave the outdrive a nasty whack that jarred the entire boat but I saw no physical damage to the prop or outdrive.

With the engine compartment open, the only thing out of place was the plastic heat shield had fallen off the fuel filter and was laying in the bilge.

With the key on, the fuel pump cycles as normal. The engine started normally. After 10 minutes of fast idle at the dock I shut it off and it restarted normally. I then did several high speed passes near my docks. The engine runs normally through the throttle range and at WOT seems normal.

Back to the docks for shut down and it again started normally. I let it cool for a bit and it started normally

Thoughts on this??? Could the heat shield off the fuel filter caused some kind of vapor lock or fuel pump cavitation?

I am at a loss......

no resister wire..........100% not relevant!

the resistor wire or ballast is ONLY used on point ignitions............ONLY.

many efi use a regular GM distributor, internally registered coil (same or similar as thunderbolt V and IV) ,cap and internal components. Although I do not have any real experience on efi I do believe that the components are all stock GM and are what would be called electronic ignition.

The ballast or resistor system has not been used since the introduction of electronic ignitions........early '80s

With the exception of 4 cylinders which used points until the '90s

..."With the exception of 4 cylinders which used points until the '90s "

Right. Was thinking of my old 4 cylinder.

So do you guys have an opinion about the fuel filter heat shield coming off?
Could t have caused the no start problem?

Ajay (and forum members) -

Thought that I would share a similar issue that I had with my 1999 350 MAG MPI as this sounds somewhat familiar to an issue I had this summer. Was able to diagnose and fix (if you don't want the full story - see below).

Issue: Initially - Intermittent loss of power. Finally - Died and would not re-start. Fuel pressure and supply both good. Spark – intermittent/weirdness.

Issue started last Fall. Just cruising and start to feel like the boat was running out of gas; power would momentarily fall off (like no power; ignition shut off), then would come back. Ran absolutely fine and all engine RPMs, even WOT (hits 4200-4400 at 60MPH). Put it away for the winter after winterizing; seem to run fine on final run on the hose before putting away for 6 months.

Pulled it out this spring and it gave me a little grief on starting; different than the past 9 seasons - cranked, tried to start. Cranked, tried to start, then caught and run okay on the hose. I changed the drive and engine oil in the fall, and re-rebuilt the raw water pump (impeller+housing). Replaced the Dist. cap and rotor+Ign trigger. Final run on the hose - perfect. All is good; off to the lake for a camping weekend with the family.

In the water, I did a couple hot-laps to make sure that it was good before picking up the wife and headed out for a day on the lake. About 10min into our trip, started to feel the 'loss of power' again - very very subtle, but I decided to turn around to just make sure all was good. Another 10 min, heading back, and it was bucking; like ignition was being turned on and off. Made it to the no wake zone and it died - would crank and crank, but would not catch. Another note; fuel pump would run intermittently with ignition on, engine not running; like there was a loose connection (Note; this is not the normal start up, which is to run for 3 seconds on contact, prior to starting). Three day weekend on the Lake ended in 20min. Fun, I love boating!

So, did the usual checks; fuel and spark.

Fuel: I have a pressure gauge right on my fuel rail (STBD side, opposite schrader valve) - Shows 35-38psi (good) when the fuel pump runs. As noted above, the fuel pump would start/stop intermittently like there was a loose connection. Pulled all the connectors off the relays and checked all (three) fuses, plus bus under the dash - all good; very good. Pulled the Fuel filter and it immediately spewed fuel; so it was not sucking air off the bottom of the filter (have had that issue too in the past - arrrgh).

Spark: Weird. When cranking, there was no spark - none. But, then the ignition was turned on, I would get a spark about 50% of the time with initial contact. Thinking that the coil was going bad – meanwhile the fuel pump seems to have a mind of its own; just taunting me further and driving me to obsess on fixing this issue.

So, comes down to a couple things at this point. Coil or something’s up with the ECM. Coil issue – that would be great. ECM issue – time to sell the boat? In the final throws of my patience, I pulled the coil off and did some checks; Good continuity between both sides; 12v and HV. Noticed that it was leaking oil – thinking that it was a temperature issue, but then again, it did not start hot or cold. Pulled the distributor cap and all my new parts looked good; nothing out of place. Inspected the ignition senor with a flashlight and was not impressed – looked pretty bad; little ‘rusty’ on hardware, and was blown away that the circuit board/solder joints were all exposed..

Diagnosis and Fix. Ordered new Coil and Ign sensor assy.

Installed the coil first, same issue; weird cycling of fuel pump – engine would not start.

Installed the Ignition sensor, noting that new assy is a much better design; fully encapsulated with epoxy, and now includes a grounding wire. On first attempt to start the engine may have made it a full rev before it caught and ran like a champ.

Ajay – if your running on your original ign. sensor, you may want to just replace it. So worth the $65 in my book.

Excellent write up!
I have used the boat trouble free since the "incident" but I have a nasty feeling in my gut that it's going to strand me every time I take it out. Mechanical components fail for a reason and they don't heal themselves. There is nothing more challenging then an intermittent fault and I really need to do something to get trust back up so your suggestion sounds like the best. I will get $65.00 worth of piece of mind.

Thanks very much for the post.

Ajay - Glad the info helped. I am in Nor Calif, not much here locally in regards to specialty parts, so of course, its all on-line. Don't think were allowed to advertise here, so -disclaimer- this is not an advertisement, just a reference to a parts source.

Try MichiganMotorz; they have a pretty good web site and and eBay store. I have order parts directly and from eBay. They have been pretty responsive via Telephone and have good communications via e-mail, etc.

Glad boats not giving you grief at the moment, but I know exactly how you felt . . . always wondering. Good luck.
