2000 Honda 90hp temp?

My motor seems to be running hotter than im used to. This is my first 4-stroke and all my other 2-strokes ran much cooler to the touch. I replaced my impeller, the old one was still 100% intact, and put a new thermostat. It still gets pretty hot to the touch, but you can still hold a finger to the head for about 2 sec without getting burned. I'm just wondering if this is normal for these motors. I constantly pull the engine cover off and check the temp with my hands when on the water and it never seems to get hotter than stated earlier, but still seems like its a little hotter to the touch than it should be. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

I have the same motor, I think it is the same as far as the head goes, mine seemed to be that temp. Mine definitely get hotter running it with muffs, but if I run it in my "special" trash barrel for this purpose it runs about the same as in the ocean.

The thermostat is supposed to start opening at 162 degrees. It should be fully open at 180 degrees.

Yes, this is hotter than most two strokes (which are in the range of 130 -140 degrees or so)

Your two second..then "ouch" rule...works pretty good to checking temperature. Any less than two seconds to get the ouch is not good.

Next week when I pull my boat for the next 100-hour, I plan to install temperature sensors that will give me an accurate reading of water jacket temps. Once done and working, I'll post it with pictures. It can be adapted to most any outboard.

The problem I'm trying to solve is that when Honda detects an overheat problem it will shut down without warning. I want a warning before that happens and I want to establish normal operating temperatures under different loads so I can take action before a shut down.
