2000 Honda 50 dies at idle

Helping some friends with a boat they recently acquired and launched. It has a carbureted 2000 Honda 50. The engine starts and runs fine, but when it sits at idle for a few minutes, it will die. It will start right back up and run fine again. Would like to hear any ideas and what to look at to fix this problem.

If it runs ok after the second start, adjust the idle stop to increase the idle a little. A good carb balance could help too.

If it continues to stop, then it might need the idle adjusted to increase the idle, a carburetor balance, and/or the idle passages in the carburetors cleaned.

Other variables could be valve clearances, spark plugs, fuel, oil level, or thermostat (stuck open)...to mention a few.

My 2007 50 (carbed) is VERY sensitive to having the carbs in sync. Get a hold of a calibration gauge set and make sure they are right on the money! (one of my carbs was way off and was causing dying at idle)

Thanks for the input. I guess I need to get this engine out on the water and take a look. That will be a week or so. I'll post findings.
