2000 Evinrude 200 hp Fichts

I am considering purchasing 2 2000 Evinrude 200 hp Fichts with 700 hours on them. Both were used together on the same boat since new and according to the seller have been maintained by the dealer each season since new. According to the seller there are no outstanding issues and the only ongoing item is purging of the EMM cooling lines each season. I have read on this site extensively about troubles with this motor but I rarely see anyone with good experiences. I would like to hear from those still using this engine with comments including their problems and how many hours their engines have. All replies are appreciated.

Ask seller if you can take to dealer and have EMM record printed out. This will show any codes and errors that have occurred. You can also get the serial numbers and call Brp and see if they still have records on updates done to engine..Only problem with them is BRP does not support any Fichts/Etec before 2004 and parts are slowly going away

I'VE SAID IT BEFORE AND I'LL SAY IT AGAIN. BRP IS REALLY STARTING TO SUCK !!!!!!!!!!! Started working on OMC products in 1966 and was very happy until BRP came along !!!!!

Not much positive at all in that comment. I presently run a 2000 Johnson 150 Oceanpro (carbureted) which I bought used in 2012. It has been a very good engine but it replaced a 1979 Evinrude 200 hp and I would like to get back to that power level. The boat is rated for a 225 hp. I thought I could go bigger with the FICHT but still keep my fuel consumption lower than my current Oceanpro. I thought I could purchase the two Fichts and keep one as a spare. Thanks for your comment though.

1998 thru 2001 (rough year estimate) were very bad years for OMC, and the Ficht motors during that timeframe contributed heavily to OMC's problems.

They blew up. There were problems in the Ficht injection system, bad EMM programming, and even flame distribution problems at the time of spark and resulting ignition of the fuel air charge.

If you have two running Fichts from 2000, you are very lucky. I for one would stay away.

I have a 2004 DI 225HO on my boat, which is the younger sister of the 2000 Ficht. I believe they had the problems ironed out by 2004, but I still have weird failure issues to deal with, like presently it is using WAY WAY too much oil.

People are scared of the Fichts, they have no resale value to speak of, and the parts are not available....injectors for example.
Your model has injector coefficients that must be programmed into the EMM. Well, there is no way to obtain such co-efficients from BRP if you wanted to use a used injector. They won't give them out.

So, these Fichts and DIs are gonna be problematic to keep running. Consider there are carbed Johnsons and Evinrudes that are 30-40 years old still running.
I doubt there will be any Fichts or DIs running that long.

I have a 1999 225 FICHT. Get the EMM printout if you can. I did, it will tell you plenty. The info I got from Service center was that if it had over 100hrs your ok. Mine had 650hrs. Never had a fault code or over heat. They are hard to resale for any money. That being said, if the price is right? go for it. The Spark plugs are high and need to be indexed (properly installed) You may even have to buy extra plugs just to have what you need. I also have a 2000 Ocean Pro 150hp on my second boat, What size is your boat? If you don't need the extra power you may not like the added expense the FICHT will have over your ocean pro. plugs 2.50 vs 10$ each. More expensive oil, fuel additive and maybe stuff I'm missing. My FICHT is more costly to run. But I do like it. And because I can't get anything for it, I still use it...LOL. Just my 2 cents.

My 150 Oceanpro is on a Glastron Sea Fury V216 WA. It does 38 mph at 5500 rpm but likes the fuel at that speed. Thanks for your comments.

My 225HO is on a 22.5' Hurricane Deck boat. Modified tri-hull. It does 50 at WOT on flat water with one person aboard.
It is rated for a 175, but I have rebuilt the whole hull, replaced the transom, and seriously beefed it up.
It is a stronger boat than when manufactured.
It starts to chine walk at 50.

38 mph is pretty good depending on where you fish at. I fish the Delaware Bay in NJ and off the Atlantic coast. Not many days it's flat enough to do over 30. I'd make sure that your boat is structurally sound. There is a over one hundred pound difference in the weight of those two motors. Yours being 375 vs almost 500lbs for the FICHT. At the right price and with a (good) history report, I would not be scared to buy the pair.

I fish in Newfoundland in a bay call Trinity Bay which has a 60 mile indraft amd I am located in the very bottom of the bay. It does not normally have the ocean swell you may encounter but a Northeast gale can be quite damaging. A 1979 Evinrude 200, which was on my boat originally, weighs the same as a 2000 Johnson 150. Go figure!

I never thought the Fichts and etec's would be 100 pounds more. While I believe the Glastron can handle the extra weight, I am slowly talking myself out of the purchase. The seller has an offer on one of the engines and told me he would get back to me if that deal falls through. I have made him an offer of $5,000 for both engines and would not consider paying any more than that based on what all who have posted to this thread have stated. Thanks everybody for your opinions.

Smart move to wait for better deal with less worry. If he gets 5k for the pair he's doing good. I wouldn't pay that much, maybe 2500. If I had the space to save the other as a spare. As stated, parts are scarce.
