"im new to boats. i just bought a 1998 baja 272 performance. 454 mag carbeurated. it has been problems so far im ready to give up.
problems started with a pop every once and a while at any speed thru carb, and a sudden loss of pawer for a sec. then it began to stall at idle and not start up for a few min i could turn it over and it would try to start then immediately die. it has a thunderbolt v ignition. changed the plugs rotor, plug wires, dist cap. didnt make a difference. and timing is dead on.
brought it to roadrunner marine in newiberia, la two weeks later and $2200 it still doesnt run right.

the sea pump was changed, new fuel pump, filter and (supposedly a new ignition control module) later, the boat starts!!! however i put it in the water and give it gas, no matter what throttle setting i get it to it will rev up to then after a second or so die down a couple thousand rpms, then pick back up and die down. this will go on for ever.....
they charged me 400 for a ignition module, when i was having problems with it on the water i began looking around and found that the ignition module was a used one. the mechanic told me that a new one was 600 and would have taken three weeks to get. i think that is B.S.!! I think i got screwed 2200$ latter and the thing still doesnt run right.

mechanic said it seems as if something electrical was heating up and then cutting out. thats why he changed the module. ....

someone help me please... im mechanically inclined. tell me what to check and i will..... i cant afford another 2200 for it to not still work.. i want to sue this guy i think he took me for a ride...."

What about the vent line for the tank and the anti-syphon valve.run off a outboard tank to check the fuel system

Henry:

Did they change the spark trigger sensor under the rotor? It may be part of the problem espec. if it is all rusted. Timing must be reset if it is changed. Ask for your old module back; may still be good. Your coil may be going wacky; not sure. Stick on a substitute coil and see what happens.

"the vent line was checked. the check ball was fine a clear for fuel lines. the spark trigger was indeed changed ( so he says...) idont know if he reset the timing or not. ill check that out. when i replaced the plugs and the wires i bought an accel coil and replaced the old one. any other ideas. also, when it is a low idle it does ok, just when i bring up the rpms doe this happen. maybe it just isnt noticable at idle but is still there?"

sounds alot like a fuel starvation problem.
Is the carb inlet screen clean? what is the pressure at the carb? Is the pressure steady?
May be a sticky float valve or debri in bowls.

"feul line was checked, not sure about the screen in the carb or what the pressure there is. guess i ll check that next. went and told the mechanic today how upset i was at spending all this money to have the boat run like crap still. he said he would make it right and not charge me labor, only whatever the parts needed . it was good to have someone stand by thier wirk and want to make it right!!."
