Ok guys I need some advise. My engine will idle fine on the muffs but spits sputters, coughs and shuts off at idle when in water. It’s frustrating at the dock. Fuel is clean. New primer bulb and new fuel filters. Butterflies are closed all the way at idle. It runs great cruising. Also new plugs. Could the VRO pump be acting up ? It is 23 years old

The trouble shooting on an outboard always starts with a compression test.---Post your numbers.------Did you buy the motor 23 years ago ?-----Did the problem show up suddenly ?

I’m at the beach now with the wife & kids. I live 5 hrs away so naturally it would give me issues now. I’ll check compression as soon as I get home on Monday. I’m not the original owner but my buddy was. He’s retired Coast Guard and he kept boat in tip top shape. I’m very picky about my boat also so I take very good care of her. I’m a 30 year Diesel engine tech. So I don’t mind doing all the work myself

Ok guys 110 psi on all cylinders. I did change the plugs from NGK TO Champions QL78YC. Still no change
ran engine out of a remote tank. Still no change
cleaned carbs - still no change
all butterflies are closed at idle too
i gave up and drove the 5 hrs home today. Put it on muffs and engine ran fine at idle. Never once ran rough or shut off. Put in gear and still ran good. Rpms are at 900 though. But shifts ok. I don’t understand why it’ll run good on muffs but not in water...

They all run good on muffs.----Will sound good on 4 of 6 cylinders.----In gear on muffs is still neutral as prop does no work.

Ok guys I ran outta barrel and it won’t idle smooth. I did a link synch and all is perfect there. Just rough idle and cuts off.

Ok I ordered OEM carb kits. I’m gonna rebuild the carbs but I’m wondering about the throttle body. Should I take it off and clean it or can I leave it on and clean it?

Nope ...remove screws and gasket, spray out with cleaner and run small wire thru holes, install gasket and cover.

Thanks I just ordered the cover gaskets. I’ll clean them out with cleaner and run a torch tip cleaner through them. I’ll update after all carbs and TB are rebuilt and cleaned. Fingers crossed.

Ok I’ve cleaned carbs and waiting on kits. Removed TB covers, gaskets and valves. I kept everything in order to put back as it was. Do I just clean out the two holes in front one is where valve screws in and other is above it? I kinda see a small hole at the top where cover came off. It may actually be two or three holes. Are these holes too that need to be cleaned?
