1997 130 hp keeps stopping

I have an E130TLEUB. It has started to become somewhat unreliable. I was cruising down the lake at about 4000 rpm when all of a sudden the motor just stopped. Before I had time to figure out what happened, about 1 sec, it started firing again and just kept going. This has happened numerous times and I want it fixed. I am no mechanic, but I have my own theory and wanted to pick your brains as to what you think might be wrong. It doesn't seem to happen at 3000 rpm or less..

I am thinking it is probably the stator. Since the motor just stops - it doesn't miss or slow down, and when it goes again it seems fine, I figure it has to be electrical. I have almost no experience with 2 stroke engines and taking it to a mechanic with an "intermittent" problem will not get me far. I am sure there are people who have seen this before and can offer their expertise.
