1996 mecury 150 offshore - charging issue

Hi!
I have a 1996 mecury 150 offshore engine. At the end of last season, I noticed that the battery wasn't being charged. I could jump the battery, and start the engine, and then could run out for that trip. But the battery was not charging the entire time I ran the engine ... Appeared to only read the actual voltage of the battery at that time.

So this season, I replaced both regulators ... Same result. The engine runs smoothly at any rpm range, but now it appears that the starter just spins for a couple of key turns, then it suddenly works, starts the engine and it runs fine. The tach works fine ... All the time.

I'm thinking that the stator may be bad ... The windings for the charging I think after gone even though with limited visual inspection I don't see anything that appears burnt.

So ... Does it sounds like I have the problem defined correctly ... And - how difficult is it to replace the stator on that engine?

Ohms out the yellow wires on stator...hard to believe both side down. Also check the purple wire for voltage when key is on.
