1996 200hp Evinrude Ocean Pro fuel issue?

I have the above mentioned motor on my 92 Mako. The motor starts right up and runs fine. It then will idle for some time and die. If I am into the throttle a bit it will also sputter and die unless I lightly squeeze the fuel line ball every few seconds.

Now I had to remove the inboard fuel tank that was bad. So I have been running it off a 6 gallon tank that is for my 50hp Johnson. Is this small tank causing a fuel restriction? I am wondering if the pick up tube and fittings are too small for this hog of a motor.

Any help please! I want to get this boat into the water soon.

Thanks,
AL

As "bullet" indicates.... the fuel line assemblies (hoses) come in two diameters.

It was stated in a OMC bulletin back in 1976 when the V6 models first hit the scene that the V/6 (and higher) models required the larger of the two fuel hose assemblies.

I just bypassed everything but the squeeze ball it went straight into the tank. It's doing the same exact thing so I believe there is a carburetor issue or an air leak. My plan is to clean parsley rebuild carburetors and replace all the fuel lines. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If your having to pump bulb to keep it running its either: air leak, VRO pump,or crankcase compression....not the carbs

Can you buy a line kit with the correct bends for the carbs? I have looked online and don't see any listed? If not I'll just have to make up my own.
Also the VRO was disconnected and plugged. Is there anything that should be looked at there?

Thank you so much. You guys are invaluable! Now if I could find a free mechanic along with this free advice I would be styling! I guess I have to get my hands dirty though.

Ok I checked the carb and pump lines. All appear fine. I replaced the tank lines with known good ones.
If I start the motor in the manual primer / choke position it fires and runs rough at idle.( Rich fuel?) If I throttle some and squeeze the ball every few seconds it runs great. Smooth and very little smoke.

Now if I start it with the primer /choke in normal position it will start and die quickly. If I pump the ball and start it will run rough smoke spit etc.

Could this be a fuel pump issue?
Does the VRO and fuel pump run on the same vacume from the base or separate?

It sounds like a failing pump issue.

The VRO is both a fuel and oil pump. There is no other pump.

The VRO is operated by pressure (downward action of a piston), not vacuum. The return action of the VRO's diaphragms is accomplished by a spring within the VRO.

The air motor in VRO uses pressure and vacuum pulses from the crankcase. These pulses go thru through a pair of check valves in VRO. This directs "pressure" to one side ofthe air motor's diaphragm and the other directs the vacuum cyclesto the opposite side of diaphragm. So the air piston is either being pushed or pulled towards the unload valve in pump. At idle the VRO should "click" once about every 35-45 seconds, if not a air motor kit may fix it.

I kind of having the same problem with my 2000 Johnson ocean pro 200hp. I change the vro pu p cause it was oiling way too much and I mean way too much with an oem vro. It work fine the first 2 rides then the next ride it started good but when trying to put it in gear it stall did that a couple of time then was running perfectly. Then the ride after was a bit worst in term of having it running to be able to put it in gear and it became worst and worst until it would burn the fuel in the line from the priming bulb to the vro. Here's what I did, change the priming bulb, change the gas filter, remove all the gas from the tank, remove to check the pick up fuel line to check the little filter. Everything was cleaned and ok. Re assembled everything back and tried it and same thing. I ran a hose directly from the vro to a 5 gallons of gas that was higher than the vro and surprisingly the motor was running perfectly. So is it a bad vro or that vacuum from the crankcase witch I don't really understand. Thanks for your help.

Concrete.----Post the actual compression test values.-----Cylinder compression test results may offer clues on compression in the crankcase.

ok thanks, will do that. After all the work done I realized that the new oem vro pump is leaking so I change it with the old one and was working fine in the yard with the muff so I decided to try it in the water. As soon as I got it off the trailer it died and had a very hard time starting it again to put it back on the trailer. Got home put the muff on and after trying 2 time to start it, it finally started and was working fine. My question is, with all that excessive oiling, is it possible that it clogged the exhaust and or muffler? thank you very much
