Engine starts and will run for half the day then die. Batterys aren't charging. How do I check what the problem might be? Tach doesn't work if that helps. Checked the voltage at the batteries before and after starting the motor and the voltage never increased, only decreased. I can switch to a charged battery and it will start and run like a champ and then half a day later lose rpms and quit. Thanks for any help.

The tach works off the alternator's AC output and, since yours isn't working, that says the stator is shot or the wires coming from it are bad.

My 1996 60 hp was not charging and tach was jumpy. I changed the V rect/reg and it fixed the problem. I'd change that first as it's not too expensive.

Your motor has dual rectifiers and known for the bullet connectors to burn up. Check the rectifiers first as the tach output is on a separate wire from rectifier/regulator. Odds on stator bad is very low.
