On Father's Day last week we had just idled the motor down to pull into the boat harbor. The engined died, upon restart it would crank but no indication it would start. With a quick look around and still not starting, I was able to use the kicker and make it into the harbor. Once home, I discovered a loose ground wire. The copper wire had deteriorated enough and broke free of the ring connector. I was able to find the location of the ground lug and the back side of the motor against the bell housing. I discovered 8 ground wires on this lug with varying forms of decay, one fell off in my hand when twisting the ends. All ground wires have new connectors on and have been installed back on the ground lug. The engine nwill crank but will not start. While looking things over I found a few electrical items that had shorted out and let the smoke out. Coil, two Relay's and Connector, and a melted wire on the back side of the Alternator. I have replaced the Coil, two Relay's and w/ new connectors. An electrical shop bench tested the Alternator and it came back with a clean bill of health. After all of this I still have a motor that cranks but will not start. I have tested the coil wire w/ a timing light and nothing. Help, any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
TIA David

wow, no answers in 5 days, funny how all the house mouses come out to chime in with obvious suggestions but when you have an electrical issue, ot a peep.

you ned to baseline the engine. see if its getting fuel, im not certain of this motor, is it machanical or electric fuel pump?
if its getting fuel, check power and ground to the coil, you should have power with key on and when you crank the motor, using a test light, the light should flash. if no light or constant light, you need to do an ignition diagnostic test.

start with that and go from there.

Thanks for the reply. It many hours of frustration and head scratching I found the issue. When I lost the ground wire, it fried the Ignition Module, Coil, two Relays with connectors and the Alternator. After replacing these items, repairing the ground wires. I now have an engine that will start. Sea trial will be coming soon.

Do your sea trialing tied to the dock at least for the first half hour. Make sure it's not overheating or some other major thing. Put it in gear and run it thru the RPM range. You won't hurt anything and if something does go wrong you won't need to call for a tow.

so, the ignition module was the final piece in the puzzle?
Yes. I called Endor Marine Ll located in Seattle WA and they were able to tell me if I have 12vDc coming from the Coil to the Ignition Module (Pink Wire) with the ignition in the on position, it’s probably a bad Module.

Sounds good. I did run the engine at idle, with muffs, in the drive way for thirty minutes with no hick ups. I will put it through its paces at the dock.
