Hi... I just started my motor for the first time this year... 1995 BF2, 4 stroke. It ran like a champ for about 5 minutes and then stalled. I tried to pull on the cord again, but it would not budge. Rock solid. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Either through this forum or [email protected] Thank you.

Hi,

Bummer!

I'm not familiar with that model but have a couple of thoughts about what might have happened.

Please don't take offense but I need to ask:

Does this model have a centrifugal clutch? I can't locate one in the parts pages.

Did you check the engine oil before starting?

The gearcase oil?

Have you tried to turn the engine with the spark plug removed?

This outboard's engine appears to have an air cooled cylinder barrel with a fan and shroud system. But it also seems that it has a waterpump.

Do you have any knowledge about how that cooling system works?

I suspect that the water portion is used to cool the exhaust gasses but I don't know for certain having never wrenched on one before.

Have you ever serviced the waterpump system and were you running it in water when it locked up?

Sorry for all the questions and no causes listed but just trying to build a base for discussion.

I will give you a follow up after I check things out. I hung this motor on a hanger last summer... and I never checked anything before I pulled the cord yesterday... pretty stupid to say the least... I should have known better.

Well,.the excitement of putting winter behind you and getting ready for the water has tripped us all up at one time or another.

Also, depending on what you find, the cause may not be as serious as what first might come to mind.

If there's engine and gear oil present, the cause might be something that's more easily dealt with like a siezed mainshaft bushing or maybe a locked up clutch.

It didn't stop with an instant "STOP", rather it sounder like it was running out of fuel, or needed more choke I had never heard a motor seize in live time, and really didn't think any thing was out of the ordinary, until I tried the pull cord again. Thanks for your input. I'll keep you up to speed.

Did it run out of fuel ?-----Is the engine oil level correct ?----Is gear oil level correct?------If you remove the recoil, can you turn the flywheel?
