1989 15 hp Johnson with no spark

There is no key, just a kill switch and intermittent toggle switch to turn on the starting solenoid to send power to the starter. But let’s forget about the electric start components and pretend that it’s only pull start.
As for spacing of the power pack (the new blue component), I mounted it loosely on the plate, put a business card against the outside edge, then gently placed the flywheel on. Removed the flywheel, tightened the screws (with blue locktite). However, there really wasn’t much slack in the positioning of the powerpack screw holes.

Where are you seeing the melted area, Tim?
Simplified readings:
Rectifer
black lead to red wire, red lead to each yellow: yes
Red lead to ground, black lead to yellows: yes, higher than above
Red lead to ground, black lead to yellows: yes for both
Reversed the leads on the wires and got no readings.

Stator
Black lead to yellow, red lead to y/grey: yes
Black lead to yellow, red lead to y/blue: yes
Black lead to solid yellow, red lead to ground: no

charging coil wires are under the plate.

I will get back with you on the power pack and ignition coils readings when I get home or to the guys house.

Hopefully this cleared some things up
 
Thanks. At the rear of the coil where the laminated core enters. Had it been rubbing on the flywheel and had it been worked on before? I can always tell because most all mechanics tend to make marks on the mounting screws. Like as I stated a couple times already, that exciter/charge coil can ohm out okay, yet still arc internally with fubar to pack, brah! You CANNOT ALWAYS TRUST AN IMPEDANCE TEST ON A COIL PRODUCING VOLTAGE.....

Don,t work like a bush mechanic use correct tools to do the job use a feeler gauge not a plastic card set the air gap to +/- 0.028 inch .
 
Its for this reason why they made this part its called a coil locating ring the part no: for it is 317001 if it does,nt have points you use this ring because it sets the air gap for the sensor and makes sure every thing is in a perfect 360 degrees so that after you,ve used it and tightened the bolts before you remove it.then when the flywheel goes on the air gap is set automatically with this ring . and also for some reason i dont know why do not tighten the earth to tight on the trigger plate if you do it wont spark i do not know if it applys to this model.
 
You understand what i mean using the machined ring is easier the feeler gauge can be used if you make your own ring using the inside diameter of the magnets its easier to just buy the ring .part no 317001
 
I wonder if he ever got it fixed......Probably on hold for the cold weather, or a federal employee. Now I appreciate being self employed in my own small businesses. Struggle it might be, you can always sell something to pay your bills.
 
Tim, yes the motor is back up and running. I had taken all the wires off the terminal post before taking it to the older gentleman. He had another 15 that he put beside mine to compare it to; reconnected the wires and compared the readings. We are guessing that one of those wires wasn’t getting good connection because both plugs are producing a good blue spark. He said the starting solenoid was wrong for the motor and I needed to put a heavier gauge wire to the starter from the terminal post. He said all the components under the flywheel were operating correctly. He only charged me $40.
