1988 Honda 9.9 needs "points"?

Hello all,

Major newbie here -- please forgive any stupid questions. I'm looking at buying a 1988 Honda 9.9 and the gentleman selling it says it needs 'points'. Nearest I can tell from reading online is that it's a tune-up/timing issue? The local Honda shop tells me they wont touch a motor that uses them. Is this something I can work on myself? Any issue getting parts?

Any general issues/concerns I should be aware of regarding this generation of Hondas?

Thanks kindly for your time.

Pete

First of all....you better double check with the seller on the year. 1988 9.9 had electronic ignition. No points.

If in doubt of the year, post the frame serial number and that will tell us for sure.

The 1978 9.9 (BF100) did have points. They are no longer available. I do not know if anyone on the forum has been able to locate any equivalent replacement. If so, then, unless you are really talented at small engine repair....take a giant step backwards and save yourself some money and headaches.

I agree with Mike....ALWAYS DO!

But, what he DIDN'T say is that, even if it has the CDI (capacitor discharge) "electronic" ignition system and NOT points...it can still be problematic to repair one for someone that is not fairly well skilled at figuring out magneto type ignition systems.

While all the parts are probably available if that's the case, troubleshooting takes an experienced technician regardless.

So, buying one on the hope of getting it running later may end up as a big disappointment unless you have some reliable help.

Just sayin'.

Thanks very much for the replies! That was great info for me to make my decision.

It is a B100 motor from 1978 and he had a typo in the ad. From talking with him I think that was just an honest mistake.

The motor is actually running well now, which wasnt clear from his ad, and the gentleman selling it was mentioning the points as a future problem based on what his mechanic had told him last time. It fired right up on the 2nd pull and we had it running for about 15 minutes in a tub.

He was willing to sell it to me for $200 CDN (around $150 US) because he's nearly 70 and was finding it a bit much to wrestle on and off his boat. At that price I feel like it's a great motor for me to get started with and I'm sure I'll learn a lot as I go along. For now I'm just looking forward to taking it out on the lake.

I'll post the SN when I'm home if you wouldnt mind looking it up to confirm the year. Thanks again for the info!

Hi PeterC,
As the late...GREAT....Paul Harvey used to say.....

"and noW!"....."You know the REST of the story.".......

.......And......

IT'S ALL GOOD!

YES! Since it came down like that and for that amount of money.....you SHOULD buy it!

I have paid that much for non running, incomplete "parts" outboards. More than once!

It sounds like you got a great deal from a great guy!

Congratulations!
