hi all

just want to see if anyone can help me on this . bought a boat with a evinrude v4 90 start this year and it has no
serial number stamp on it and im looking to find out what year it is and serial number for parts etc .

i have already contacted evinrude with the numbers stamped on the plug on the power head and the told me that this number was
no good as it showed it to be a replacement engine as the number began with R and told me only way to find out my year and serial number
is by getting a diagnostic plug in ? i questioned this straight away with them as i am a heavy goods mechanic here in ireland and find it hard to beleave a engine of that year has diagnostic function . it does have the plug on the remote control unit as they said but my question is what software and interface is required for it if anyone knows

if anyone can help it would be great . thanks killian

OMA!!!!
Evinrude told yu to get a computer on it to determine the year?
If true, that is remarkably stupid of the "support" guy you talked to.

This does fall in line with the overall horrible reputation that BRP is cultivating regarding quality of service.

Now, to your problem. Get some pics up.
If you study the parts pages, you will see that these engines sort of get grouped as a "family", i.e. the 90, 115, and 140 of certain years are so similar in engineeriing/build that they can almost be called the same motors.
So, you will find that regardless of your actual year, parts from an 84 thru 90 might fit.
Once you find the family similarity, the only real differences might be cowling decals, paint colors, and a handful of others. Sometimes the linkages change a bit, sometimes the stator is beefier, but in general, there is not much real difference.
The reason for this is that Evinrude would offer 3 motors with different HP ranges, and using the basic "same motor", they would change the carb size, tune the exhaust differently, and have a 140 from a 90 design.

Study the parts pages, and you will see what I am trying to say.

Sorry, but I sure agree with Daselbee as BRBs' customers service is getting worse. Noticed this on other forums also.
