1986 mariner 45 with rich issues

Hi everyone I have a 1986 mariner 45 serial # A987331 that has carb issues. the carbs have the economizer jet and there are no baffles in the carbs. This motor has always seemed to run on the rich side and i have never seen a chalky colored surface gap plug come out of it. They are always a dark gray color. I will have to pull a carb off to see if the main jets are .057 for where i live but will it hurt the engine if i run .055 main jets in it to lean up the mixture. can i run it without the baffles or do i need to make some? this is going to be a long process but I would like to have it running right by next spring crappie season. In my opinion those baffles should have been a solid casting of the carb instead of sheet metal. Thanks everyone I am more used to working on diesel engines.

First.....missing baffles will not cause problems. Their purpose is to stop fuel sloshing when in rough water. Do you have a tach and what is WOT RPM?

thank you faztbullet my boat does have a tach but it has an intermitent problem that i probably should address. my motor is a 4 cyl and when i get in open water it acts almost like it is running on 2 cyl but it is cranking well and idling well. I did something stupid a couple of years ago by putting way to much mix oil in it and it has run crappy ever since. also in may i pulled the carbs because the bottom one has gas coming out of the float bowl vent and the bottom float was leaking and i replaced both fuel pumps and floats and i replaced the spark plugs. It is still running like the mixture is too rich and fouling the plugs. I will have to get back to you with the rpms at wot. I am a retired diesel mechanic but I am not to good on outboard engines and I have a seloc manual on my motor.
