1986 Johnson 150 - removing lower unit to replace steering arm

I have not been able to identify how to remove the lower unit on my 1986 Johnson 150. Specifically, I haven't been able to figure out how to detach the shift linkage.

Backing up a bit, I need to replace the steering arm that has rusted away. I appears the shift linkage goes through the steering shaft. Is this correct? If this isn't right, then please send some advice.

Darn, I can't upload the image from the book because of an error. I'll try to upload that to a reply post, showing "c" as the "shift rod screw" which is identified as the thing that must be removed in order to remove the lower unit.

The other photos are of my engine, and I simply can't figure out where the "shift rod screw" is located.

Any help? Also, do I have to remove the lower unit in order to replace the steering assembly?

Go to shopevinrude.com. Look up your motor and go to throttle and shift. It will be part # 3. Take that out.

Its under bottom carb on shift block(#2) and you need to remove powerhead, lower unit and midsection to replace steering arm. Form the looks of it that a salty/brackwish water motor so get ready to break/heat/beat parts apart and you will likely need new upper/lower mounts and yoke as the bolts freeze up in them.

faztbullet is spot on. If bolts start breaking..... My advice is to shop a newer engine. You may end up spending the same money and in the end you will still have a 1986 engine.
