Hey guys new to forum and boating in general. I recently picked up a 1985 basstracker1710 with a 1985 Mercury 150hp blackmax xr2 And has WH-29 carbs. The guy I bought it from says it ran good but would load up at an idle. I figured easy fix with new plugs and fresh fuel.....BOY WAS I WRONG!! I got it home put it on a hose it would start to load up but a little throttle and it’s clean itself out rev up just fine back to neutral and it loads back up after about 20 seconds put it on the water and it wouldn’t idle without giving it some throttle. Couldn’t get it to idle in gear to get out of the bay luckily no one was around so I canned it. Once I got it opened up it ran like a scalded dog. Got to plane super fast and was cruising at 25-30. Get to the spot and shut it down it loads up and won’t stay running. Got home Poured a can of sea foam into roughly half a tank of fuel and another into a water/fuel separater filter and did a hot soak on the motor. Ran a compression test and pulled 75-80 psi across the board changed plugs (BU8H). I’ve pulled the top carb and it looks like they have been rebuilt recently. Float was set even when upside down. I can only imagine that the other two are the same condition. Installed carb and Started it back up and it won’t load up on the hose. Put it in water problems still there. Removed advance module and reset max timing to 20 btdc. Was able to get it to run long enough to set idle timing to 8 atdc. But the only way we could get it to stay alive in gear was to have the neutral rpms at 18-2k. Yes I know that’s terrible. And it sounded even worse getting it in gear but we were able to go places at speeds never before as in. No wake speeds. We fished a few hours and it comes time to go and the problems come right back. Won’t idle in gear but for 5 seconds. Loads up and dies.
