1984 Merc. 150 Power Issues

Need your thoughts. My 150 Merc. will start and idle fine. When I am in a no wake zones the motor will lose power slowly and stop. Similarly, when I put the throttle down it will seem to plateau then die. Again, it will restart and idle. Many times the motor will work through the plateau and seem to work fine. Compression good. New plugs. Clean Carb. New gas hoses. Getting spark. Open to next step in trouble shooting.

The stator had an idle side (<3000 rpms) and a high speed side > 3000 rpm's +/- where that division was. They failed and its worth checking with a DVA and costs nothing to check.

Sorry but that's not quite correct....the stator does have a high speed and low speed side but outputs is constant to switchbox. The internal rectifier in switchbox box is what switches from low/high speed and the high speeds starts at around 1700RPM not 3000Rpm

Many thanks for your help! I replaced both the stator and (trigger while I was at it) and the motor performed great. Did not die once or lose any power. Really appreciate your willingness to share your expertise to one that had gotten to the end of his rope.

Thanks for the report. It's always great to hear what solved the problem. Did you get electronics from CDI?

I did get the trigger from CDI. Some marine shop for the stator. I must admit that I went cheap route. I had written enough checks chasing potential problems I did not want to spend a lot until I had it narrowed down. My plan is to finish up the season and replace with Mercury parts.

I'm glad the stator was the solution. Don't waste money on Mercury replacement parts for ignition components. Higher priced and no warranty. CDI is the way to go. They are interested to keep reliable parts in your older engine that work, it's their business.

Since CDI sold out several years ago their QC has dropped way down...Sierra is best for buck as have a lifetime warranty on parts...JMO

Good to know, didnt realize they had been sold, they made great replacement electronics, I believe they started out as Rapair, in the 80's you could get Chrysler rebuilt powerpacks from them and other parts.

I knew the owner...Ray was a engineer on the Saturn 5 rocket and had a old Ford that the ignition module on fender wheel was prone to fail. He started repairing these and it turned into a business. They used to have a core bank and would buy old dead switchboxes, packs and stators and reuse the body. Most of the workers back then was handicapped and had a great tech support team but that's all gone.
