1984 lower unit interchange

I have a 50hp, fresh water Mercury long shaft motor with a bad shift seal bushing. It is long deteriorated. Does anyone know what years/engine size that will interchange with it? I can’t get that bushing to budge, drilled 4 small holes in it hoping to free it up, no luck

Did you loosen/remove the set screw that holds it in place? The bushing should come right out with a little prying. Never seen one stuck even in salt water. Tip- if you get it to move keep downward pressure on the shift shaft to keep it from coming out with the bushing or you'll pull it out of the shift cam and open up another can of worms. That bushing was used in many different models and very easy to find, you'll need a new seal and oring unless you find the whole bushing kit. Very easy job.

I stand corrected, I just went to the shop and I had a 402 gearcase on the stand and it also has the threaded bushing. I was thinking of the smaller 4-9.8 gearcase, sorry for the confusion. Now understanding the problem. Are the two slots on either side buggered up?

Should be able to take a dull chisel and get it to move. It you can get it a 1/4 turn ,needle nose vise grips should bring it out rest of the way

The top of it was split in half but only 1/2 circle of top was there. I tried to carefully tapping it and now it’s just a flush top. I ended up trying to drill it out first with a 1/8” drill then a 3/16”. Nothing, heat tapping, kroil it’s almost as though it is completely corroded tight! I thought drilling it might release its tension but no such luck. The bottom end is junk if I can’t get it out. I can drop a punch down through one of the holes and then tap and pretty hard too, nothing
