Noob...

i have a 69 Larson with an 81 evin 50 hp out. It sat for a total of about 8 years with a couple outings between.. It used to run great full throttle idle etc... now it will NOT idle and only runs under half throttle. Tested for spark and found only the bottom coil was firing. The top wouldn't. So i switched the bottom wires to the top coil and now the top fired (using bottom coils wiring) while the bottom coil did not. So I know both coils are good but what would make one of the two coil wires not get power? Power pack or the stator maybe? Where the coil wires come together in the wiring harness connects the black (ground?) wires is pretty corroded. Could that cause one cylinder to fire and one not fire?? PLEASE HELP!!!

if I understand right the stator is a magnetic charging system that supplies power to the power pack which supplies power tho the spark plugs is that correct?

after looking at parts break down(this site), that year has separate charge coil, trigger sensor and stator. so as i understand it, charge coil and sensor are for ignition, stator goes to rectifier and charging. check out CDI for good troubleshooting guide online.

Im a little daft when it come to boat terminology.. had it for 10 years got it when I was 15 just now starting to get interested in getting it going so I'm not too good with it. I am a complete diy person on my trucks but this seems a little new to me...

start with compression test, post results. test spark with open air tester set to 7/16, testers at auto parts store work good, but you said spark is an issue.
you should change water pump impeller and change lower unit oil. remove all grounds(all connections, just to cover all bases) clean, apply dielectric grease, and reinstall
look around for a manual, ebay, this site, and maybe online downloadable

I took the power of pack off getting ready to order another one (from a boat shop in town but the owner said he's the wrong guy to talk to apparently he doesn't work on 2 stroke?!?!? My fault for not knowing a boat shop don't know how to work on 2 strokes right...) so I saw the wires were badly corroded and flaking off to the touch. I untapped the harness and there were several rotted wire jackets allowing wires to touch/arch together taking power from where it needed to go (the coil).i Replaced with a new harness with some red black wire I had laying around. Now both cylinders fire I had to adjust the throttle to keep an idle but it has reverse now and seems like it will hit full throttle. So seems like i got it all figured out.. Going to test it on the water tomorrow.. I will update how it goes

Got it out a little bit of trouble at first forward wouldn't go full open switched to reverse went full switched to forward and it opened and ran perfect.. however went I back up to pull it out my f250 developed a noise in the back of the truck...>.>

I changed the low unit oil twice within two trips.. little water came out at first with the very old oil then the second time it was good. Additionally I found that water possibly got into my u joint and that's what the problem was in the truck.. when I launched.. no grease in the joint at all a real metallic stretching noise almost exploded have no idea how I made it home last night...alls well ends well

Folks are suggesting you install a new impeller in the outboard.----They try to save you agravation / a lot of grief / and a lot of money.

The impeller is made out of rubber and it dry rots over time, especially over 8 years, change it now before the season starts
