1976 omc steering cable

Trying to help a neighbor, he has a 1976 fiberform with an OMC outdrive. The steering cable has broken down at the large ball fitting that goes through the transom. This boat has dual controls. I have searched the net and not found any thing close except one that had a loose cable that would wrap around a drum?? Any source of information that you could point me to would be appreciated. Bruce

That old "over-under" push-pull cable is obsolete. some of the helm parts are still stocked, but not cables. I think Teleflex sells a conversion (but $700+ last I heard) and I'm not sure about dual station.
SO used cable would be good to look for.
The part number is on the sheath of the cable at each end- get the # and google/ebay/pray
after that, you're converting to hydraulic or something - or maybe a good fabricating shop can make something to fix your cable.

no cables avail from BRP anymore:

Thanx for the info, I will check the cable for a number and suggest he get off his wallet. Bruce

An excellent opportunity to convert to hydraulic steering. Holy cow what a difference! I bought all the stuff to do it for cheap on ebay.
