Hello,
I have almost no experience on auto and marine engines.
Recently I was left with the task of repairing an OMC Ford 302 190hp engine. Currently I have gotten the engine to run, but I had to switch a few wires around to do so and that causes undesirable behavior.
The fuel pump is supposed to kick on when the starter is engaged (correct?) and is supposed to remain running when the ignition switch is released and is allowed to return to the 'on' position (assuming the switch's turn from left to right is off, on, start with 'start' being the position that kicks back to the 'on' position when released).
The problem is, that with the factory wiring, the fuel pump never starts despite the engine turning over. However, I can change a few wires to make the fuel pump run in the 'start' position of the ignition switch only and the 'on' position only. But, this is not correct because if the ignition switch is turned to 'on' the fuel pump runs even if the engine isn't going to be ran.
I had to replace the starter solenoid and before then, the fuel pump ran properly with the default wiring. I'm guessing I threw a breaker or blew a fuse somewhere along the way and I don't know exactly what to look for or where it is. Of course, it might not be a fuse or breaker (all fuses I found looked fine). However, I don't know where the breakers are located.
The service manual I have doesn't have a complete wiring diagram for the engine.
What would cause the fuel pump to not engage? The fuel pump does in fact work because I can run the engine with modified wiring, but as I said, it has adverse side-effects.
If something was unclear, I'll be happy to clarify.
