good afternoon group,
i have a question so i have this '74 merc 85hp with no reverse. i can manually shift the lower unit into reverse no problem with the lower unit out, the shift mechanism and cables (cables are brand new and properly adjusted) will slide on the guide to go into reverse but when the lower unit is installed i have no reverse. i reinstalled lower unit with both mechanisms in forward (lower unit and shifter) per mercury maintenance manual. so it seems to me that maybe its a problem between the cables / shift guide and lower unit inside that area. Another thing that is weird If I push the gear selector all the way to the end of the guide it goes back into forward so almost like I am missing reverse all together. I am wondering if anyone has had this similar problem and could maybe give me some advice. is there something I am missing a safety feature or something? I do not have the reverse lock pushrod so is that maybe the piece I am missing so it stays in reverse? any help would be greatly appreciated.
